Stand and Deliver: The Shorthorn Opportunity

No matter our breeding goals or marketing philosophies, every Shorthorn breeder in America is fighting the same fight, believe it or not. We ALL to restore this great breed to the level of relevance and respect it once commanded. Decades ago, the Shorthorn was the most influential beef breed in the world. Today, traces of that blood and that legendary legacy still lives in our herds, our history, and they manifest our potential. But as a mentor once told me, “Potential” can be a bad word as potential alone isn’t enough! It’s time to Stand and Deliver.

The truth is, no breed on the planet matches the Shorthorn’s combination of maternal superiority, remarkable docility, industry leading stayability, carcass quality, and genetic diversity. These cattle truly bring together fertility, efficiency, and profitable longevity like few others can. Their notable marbling and tenderness give them an advantage at the meat counter. And when properly selected, Shorthorns offer the balance and moderation that modern beef production desperately needs.

The world is watching and waiting for an alternative to the most popular breed out there today. Not to take anything away from these popular dark-hided cattle, they have done a heck of a job, but we all know the fertility and longevity downside seen in the commercial world when there is straight breeding of a singular breed of cattle generation after generation. The world needs a breed that can complement black-hided programs with more maternal integrity, greater carcass consistency, and cows that simply stay in the herd longer. In that global conversation, there are only two serious contenders left — and the Shorthorn has the chance to prove it is the one that truly delivers.

The argument can now longer be about show barns versus bull pens, or seedstock versus commercial goals. It’s about standing shoulder to shoulder, together, for a common cause. That cause is building a breed that makes a measurable difference in profitability and sustainability for cattlemen around the world.

The time is now for unity. Today is the day for progress. It’s high time to remind the beef industry that the most versatile, balanced, and forward-thinking cattle carry one name; Shorthorn. The opportunity is here. The world is ready. Now it’s on us as a membership to Stand and Deliver.
